Winter winds whip the waves into breaking frenzies against the black sand beach off the South shore of Iceland. The volcanic basalt sea stacks, Reynisdrangar, are said to be trolls that were turned into stone by the breaking morning light as they were trying to drag a ship full of sailors to their doom on the shore.
