Öræfajökull Öræfajökull is a glacier-clad stratovolcano in south-east Iceland, at the southern extremity of the Vatnajökull glacier, and overlooking the Ring Road between Höfn and Vík. It is the largest active volcano in the country, and on the summit crater's north-western rim is Hvannadalshnúkur, the tallest point in the country, a 2,109m (6,921 ft) high pyramidal peak. The route to the top is a popular climb though numerous and frequently hidden crevasses, and, because of this, the climb calls for experienced mountain guides. A major silicic eruption which occurred in 1362 was Iceland's largest historical explosive eruption. Another eruption occurred during 1727-28. Both eruptions were accompanied by major jökulhlaup (glacier outburst floods) that caused property damage and fatalities.
