I ran by headlamp to find a section of the beach bubbling with shellfish and crabs in the tidal wash zone and lay down in the cold Fall predawn. I got as low in the wet sand as I could and buried my tripod on the breakers edges. I just rested the camera on top, ready to snatch the camera and stand up when bigger waves hit. This made holding the split neutral density filter (keep the details, despite a wide range between shadows and bright areas) even more challenging than usual. Four just over four minutes, the dawn was filtered by low clouds on the horizon and created an amazing array of blood orange and textures.
