Ancient Ice. Time transforms layer after layer of history and mystery into ancient ice, which in turn is eventually exposed and re-formed by the elements. The wind scours and sandblasts with katabatic forces. Fire from the sun and molten lava melts or vaporizes it. Gravity pulls the ice against the earth, grinding rock and volcanic ash into layers of ice. Rain and melt waters erode, cut, and lubricate glacial movement into calving icebergs and frozen waterfalls. Wave actions artistically eat away at it like Roman chisels or crudely smash huge ice sculptures into bits on distant shores, with fractal-like results. Amidst these inevitable cycles, we humans lucky enough to be present, may bear witness to the ephemeral beauty and limitless variations against the context of time. This art assemblage explores the essence and energies of ancient ice, some in excess of 25,000 years old, by sharing distant and close encounters from both the outside and inside the ice. Elemental cycles, climate change, and abstraction form the backdrop for a collection that is both meditation and narrative.
